According to Francis Battista of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, "80% of the people who acquire a new pet buy one rather than adopt one from a shelter or rescue group....If 80% were adopted and only 20% were purchased, there wouldn't be a homeless pet problem at all."

I agree with your stance on adopting dogs from local shelters. Here's my testimonial:
I was never much of a dog person until I met my girlfriend six years ago. She had bred a very large (105 lb.) Lab that I absolutely fell in love with. As he grew older he became kind of lethargic and we thought another dog might help keep him active. We went to CAAAWS [Capital Area Animal Welfare Society] of Baton Rouge and picked out a female German Shepherd/Border Collie mix. The people at CAAWS were adamant about coming to our house and inspecting the living conditions and to see if these two dogs were compatible. After they approved everything we took ownership of Gracie who has been the most wonderful animal I have ever owned. Two years later CAAWS, who had kept up on making sure Gracie was being kept healthy and happy, called us to see if we would be interested in considering a large (100 lb.) purebred German Shepherd that the current owners could no longer handle. They knew that we had the property and experience to handle large dogs. I'm glad they did because now Gracie has a boyfriend named Thor. Thor is a wonderful almost entirely black German Shepherd. He and Gracie get along so well that I'm glad they are both fixed, otherwise we would have little ones everywhere. It is a shame that so many people don't even consider adoption and I hope that this brief testimonial in some way can help your cause.
