Delawares who have been waiting for the right time to adopt a four-legged friend and give them a forever home may find it this week as the Delaware Humane Association (DHA) and Delaware SPCA kick off their 2022 Tour For Life participation on Tuesday.

“[Tuesday,] From March 1 through Saturday, March 5, all of our dogs and cats that have been available for adoption for 22 days or more are only $22 to adopt,” said Delaware SPCA Director of Philanthropy Kate Callihan.

The week-long event is “the nation’s largest life-saving cooperative pet adoption event” and is held in partnership with North Shore Animal League America and Rachel Ray Nutrish.

“Really, the goal is just to raise awareness about adoption and how essential it is to adopt, not shop around,” Callihan said. “There are so many amazing dogs and cats in shelters across the country, and it’s really just…doing our best to get the animals in and out, because as soon as space opens up in our shelters – and in shelters across the country – there is room for more dogs and cats to be rescued and placed in good homes.”

The event is happening simultaneously in 53 cities across 37 states, and the goal is to identify the pets that have been in shelters the longest and give them the best opportunity to find their forever homes.

“We aim to make it as affordable as possible to bring more animals into loving homes,” said Corey Topel, DHA Marketing Director. “You can browse them online starting today to see who’s available and submit an adoption questionnaire, which we first need as part of our adoption process. Then you’ll work with the one of our adoption counselors to make sure it’s the right fit.. Even if there is someone you initially see on the site who may not be the right fit for you, our adoption counselors are fantastic We will work with you individually to find the right pet for your needs.

At DHA and Delaware SPCA facilities, Topel said there are currently more than 50 dogs and cats that meet the criteria for special pricing, which means there’s plenty to choose from across the state. . Callihan noted that there are deserving fees for good girls and boys who have been unnecessarily housed for so long, the fees will be waived completely just to ensure they find a decent home.

“While we have [animals] at Delaware SPCA that have been available for 22 days or more, we also have animals that have been with us so long that they actually have adoption fees that are waived,” Callihan said. “It’s worth mentioning that $22 is the adoption fee for animals that have been with us for 22 days or more, but there are dogs, I mean five or six dogs, that have been with us a little longer and have given up the adoption fees.”

And no matter where you are in Delaware, there’s a place close enough to be worth a visit if someone is looking to expand their family.

“We have three different locations in the state of Delaware,” Topel said. “The Delaware Humane Association, we have our adoption centers in Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach for people from Sussex County. We are also in the process of merging with our great friends the Delaware SPCA. They are located in Stanton-Christiana. .So between these three centers you have a lot of adoptable dogs and cats waiting to meet you.”
